Abstract
This study was conducted to predict the determinants of bone mineral density (BMD). The data were obtained from the female aged above 40 who got health examination and check BMD in department of medical screening center, Yeungnam University Hospital from January to October, 1997. Among these people, we performed inquiry by telephone to 347 subjects through random sampling and the study was conducted. The inquiry included questions about family history of osteoporosis, obstetric history including age at menarche, menopause, parity, breast feeding, past use of oral contraceptives, and tubal ligation, and life style factors such as the amount of physical activity, consumption of milk and coffee, smoking and alcohol drinking. Biomedical parameters affecting the BMD such as Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) , serum calcium and anthropometric data predicting BMD were also checked. BMD was measured by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry by means of a Norland XR-26 at lumbar spine(L2-L4) for each subject. The BMD data were presented as T scores.

Using multiple stepwise regression, we found that age, weight, and ALP were independent predictors of vertebral mineral density. All the variables accounted for 48.78% of the total variance of vertebral bone mass.
